Forest Roads Inventory Project
Forest roads provide access to our public lands. The road network facilitates recreational use and forest restoration and hazardous fuels reduction projects. If not properly designed and maintained, however, forest roads can deliver sediment to streams and create barriers for wildlife movement.
Hood River Forest Collaborative volunteers conducting an inventory of the 1340 Road near Lost Lake. The road was previously decommissioned and the collaborative was evaluating the effectiveness of the decommissioning and identifying any additional restoration needs to stabilize the road.
The Hood River Forest Collaborative, in partnership with the Hood River Watershed Group and Mt. Hood National Forest, are conducting an inventory of Forest Service roads to evaluate their current condition, maintenance needs, and restoration opportunities.
Culverts are surveyed to ensure they are not blocked by sediment or debris. Blocked culverts can lead to water flowing over the road and eventually a significant failure. Regular monitoring and maintenance helps to minimize the ecological impacts of the road network.
The Forest Roads Inventory Project is led by local volunteers and collaborative members. To learn more or to get involved contact hrstewcrew@gmail.com.
